Weeding is something that we at Rogue Star do on a daily basis! This is a process that involves stripping away excess material when we use our Roland BN-20 to cut and print heat transfer designs.
There are multiple factors that effect the weeding process, some making it extremely easy and quick, others…. well, less so.
When it comes to artwork, we are not overly limited as to what we can do, but there are some limitations. Depending on how intricate your artwork is, we may need to outline it if it has details too fine, or we may need to make a 2 colour or print/cut parts of your artwork separate from different coloured materials! There are many artworks that are very easy to weed out of a sheet of material. However, the artwork factor is extremely variable and do not always yield easy results.
The safest bet for an artwork with very fine and intricate details would be CAD or Vinyl material. These materials are thicker and allow you to get more precise cuts without tearing them. This makes the weeding process more time consuming but it produces an exact, finely detailed piece to put on clothing.
If your artwork is heavily detailed and colourful, we are able to print it on a material we call ‘Tattoo” which is amazing to print on, however, does not fair very well being cut into fine details. The tattoo material is much thinner and has a tendency to tear or snag when cuts are too close together. If there are fine details you’d like floating away from the bulk of the artwork such as fine text, we can supplement that part of the artwork with Vinyl! Otherwise, artwork we need to print onto transfer material will need to have some sort of background or outline in and around any blank space.
As seen above is an example of one of our experts weeding Sleeve Transfers out of CAD. As you can tell it has precise cuts to make the letters crisp and clear, and the excess is peeling away quite nicely!
Since there are many variables in the world of weeding, it is always best to allow the production experts at Rogue Star extra time to complete all weeding necessary for your order. For instance, if you order 2000 custom face masks such as a U of A department did in 2021, with a fully-coloured logo. You would need to allow for print time, weeding time, and a slight margin for error in the case that there is a snag in production, literally! Here at Rogue Star we have plenty of options in print methods. Heat transferring your artwork onto clothing is one of the most popular!
Now, we don’t use the little Cricut cutters you see behind a locked glass panel at Michael’s. We have a Roland BN-20, an industrial vinyl printer and cutter at our disposal which allows us to use a vast amount of materials to fit the needs of your artwork!
Though, here’s the thing… Some, if not most of our materials aren’t able to be printed on; other materials don’t cut too nicely when the print is small and detailed. So, this blog is going to help you design with the materials in mind that will do your artwork the justice it deserves!
In our shop we refer to this material as “Tattoo.” It is our most used material as we are able to print CMYK ink onto it and cut the excess vinyl away to give a bright, colorful and smooth print to press onto your garment of choice! As the Roland does print in CMYK ink, we are limited to color matching options in pantones but we will work diligently to ensure it is the closest match to your pantone color! This material, however, does not fair too well with fine details that need to be cut out and will unfortunately destroy the print if we tried to cut it out with the Roland. Therefore it is best to keep in mind that this material requires bolder or bigger text and outlines around artwork.
These two types of materials are looped in together because they are similar in the print type and application. CAD is a polyurethane material that is a more malleable material that we use for solid color prints. We mainly carry black and white CAD at any given time as they are the most requested colors for company heat transfers, but have plenty of other color options in CAD. Vinyl is fairly self explanatory, this is a less malleable but thicker and still high-quality material that provides a flat color heat transfer.
Both of these materials are flat color based and cannot be printed on, but with the color selection of the materials themselves you have plenty of opportunity to flex a creative design with a heat transfer. If your logo or artwork has multiple colors as well, we can combine different sections of print into one masterpiece! With these two materials, you can even create intricate crests and finer details that would’t be as exact on a garment than other materials.
This material is interesting. Though not well known or used by us at Rogue Star often, Clearflex is a clear transfer material that doesn’t transfer the material itself, but it uses the heat of the heat press to transfer the CMYK ink onto the garment of choice! We were quite excited to use this material the few times we have as it’s an interesting process! This allows for very small and minimal details to be transferred onto your garment without having the stress of possible wonky cuts from the Roland’s blade. The catch to this wonderous material is that our Roland at Rogue Star does not print white ink. So the limits are to lighter materials such as white or athletic grey to use this material.

You may be asking, “why do I need to worry about shirt materials for printing? Can’t Rogue Star print on any shirt I bring them?” The short answer is no. For Direct to Garment Printing at least.
This print method uses CMYK ink very similar to the type of ink your printer at home uses, which is likely water based inks. For printing on shirts, there are some specific details that must be kept in mind when placing a DTG order.
Now, if you are just printing on a piece of clothing with only black ink, then we have a lot more freedom when it comes to printable material. This is because the ink will change the colour of the material no matter the composition and produce the exact print you need. However, and this is very important to remember, this only works for using black ink, or printing on white or athletic grey shirts. The reason we have so much leeway on material composition behind this option is based on not needing an underlay of white ink. The white ink used is in our printers is the bulk of why printing on certain materials is so picky.
This is where it is super important to notice the material make-up of the clothing you want printed. Anytime we need to print with white ink, be it a solid white design or a colourful design on a dark garment, we need to treat the shirt using what we call “pretreat.” This treatment is like an eco-friendly liquid glue we spray on the shirt that then gets heat pressed and set into the fibers to catch and hold the white ink so it does not fall through. In order for it to work properly, we need the shirts to be made up of natural materials such as cotton or bamboo. There are plenty of mixed-blend shirts out there and we are able to go down to 80% cotton/20% polyester, but that mixture is the lowest amount of natural material in a shirt that we are able to print on.
This shirt is Gildan’s Heavy Cotton T-shirt that is made up of 100% cotton. This is our top t-shirt recommendation for DTG printing and it will be your most cost effective as well.

Not every type of print method is based just the number of colours or just the size, but all print methods take into account how many print locations you want. If you’re not happy with the quote you’re getting for your order, try cutting down the number of print locations you’re getting. A simple cotton shirt with 4 print locations could run you almost the same amount as a premium brand shirt with one print. Try foregoing a few prints or combining some artworks. This may mean spacing adjustments to qualify two prints as one or a rearrangement of layout.
The more, the merrier. The more shirts you print, the less expensive your order will be. The #1 thing we tell any first time custom apparel ordering client is that the promotional industry gives great discounts for bulk orders. A 10 unit quote can be cut down significantly if you order, say, 24 pieces. In a lot of cases, we find that spending the extra money on a few units to reach a new price bracket saves clients more than the higher price at a lower number of units.
When deciding to print your apparel, keep in mind that the more colours you use or the bigger the design, the more expensive it becomes. Some print methods are based on the number of colours in your design(s), some are based on size. Depending on the print shop you choose, both may play a part in the price. Reps will let you know which print method is most appropriate for your order and which your pricing is based off of. If prices are looking too steep for you, consider having your artwork altered to lessen the number of colours in it or consider shrinking it down by a few inches to save a few bucks per unit.
If you find that print costs aren’t varying much between different print methods, consider your garment colour. Many print methods need to lay down pretreatments and/or a layer of white ink before printing colours in order to make them stand out from the garment’s base colour. Instead of choosing black or coloured garments, consider using white. This will eliminate any additional steps and products that can increase printing costs. Another factor to consider is garment brands. If you’ve chosen a premium brand for your garments, consult with your rep about garments that are similar at a lower price per unit. This along with garment colour will keep your pricing high no matter the print method being quoted.
If cost-effective is your number one concern, it’s best to walk into your custom apparel project with flexibility. It’s always great to have a strong vision of what you want your order to look like, but allowing your rep to present you with various garments, brands, and print options will give you some flexibility in return. Another way to offer your flexibility is with your deadline. Allow a decent amount of time for inquiries and production by starting your order well in advance. This presents you with the maximum number of options available to complete your order inside of your budget. Production can take up to two weeks, garments may need to be ordered in, and there may be orders booked solid ahead of your in a printer’s queue.

Process

The cold peel film is removed once the fabric reaches room temperature, revealing the printed motif. Although the hot-peel film is less frequently used for DTF, it is thought to be more effective because it can be peeled off as soon as the heat press is opened. Weeding is not required, regardless of the film you use, as only the printed portions are glued and will adhere to the fabric. To increase washability and rub-fastness during post-processing, many experts advise using the heat press.

In this process, coloured polyurethane sheets are cut as per the design using a plotter and cutting machine. This print method is applied with a Heat Press, using high pressure and heat. There are many options such as reflective prints, neon prints, metallic foil prints and glitter prints can be printed. The print does not crack or fade over time and is the perfect choice for a limited number of t-shirts.
Heat Transfers are very similar to Cad Cuts, except they have the option to print the art on the paper before cutting it out. You are able to get lots of detail, and bright colours – However since it is being cut out, it needs to be simple enough that it can have a border.
This is best for logos that are too small for Vinyl cutting, or printing on Polyester and Nylon garments.
This method is mainly done on polyester t-shirts and when the printing needs to be done all over a t-shirt. In this process, the design is first printed onto sublimation paper, then placed on the t-shirt that needs to be printed. This is carried out at high temperatures and pressure. These prints last long, and the wearer cannot feel the print.
